I’m a pretty big fan of Keira Knightley’s television ads for Coco Mademoiselle, but Francesco Vezzoli’s fake perfume ad starring Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams is probably going to win me over on a bigger scale.
New York Magazine‘s Andrew M. Goldstein reports that the Italian “video artist” will team up with Roman Polanski to film a parody of celebrity-obsessed consumers, as well as how shallow the art and fashion worlds have become in order to sell their products. Portman and Williams were picked “because they’re ‘two A-list celebrities who have never endorsed a perfume,’” Goldstein quotes Vezzoli as saying, but if he really wanted to make a statement, don’t you think he’d pick someone more under the radar to front his campaign? Oh, but that’s right: hardly anyone picks models anymore, no matter what message they’re trying to convey.
Not that I’m complaining. Natalie Portman is a genius at poking fun at herself and her celebrity, and Michelle Williams is going to be a great addition to the catfight. The film releases in February.
