Sally Singer’s take on the fashion industry

Sally Singer, one of the most powerful women in fashion and media (she’s the fashion news and features director for Vogue) was recently interviewed by Mediabistro.com for their “So What Do You Do” series.

And though she’s whip smart, a Yale alumna, and impossibly fashionable, you might find her whole philosophy on the industry (fashion and magazines) to be a little unorthodox. Singer’s a former book reviewer who credits her history and literature background as being infinitely more valuable to a career at the most celebrated fashion pub in the world, than majoring in communications or fashion. And she’s got a pretty strong opinion on how the Internet, including Style.com, is impacting editors’ jobs, and why going to shows and cultivating relationships with designers really is still necessary.

You can check out the whole interview here, and if you’re at all interested in a career in magazines or fashion, you really should read it twice.

  • Read it twice. Printed it out. Plan to reread later. Frame it. Mount in my living room. With a 12-ply beveled matte. And repeat it as a mantra before I go out into the world each day.
